2009-12-09---Claremont Sunrise takes City Architectural Commission by Storm

Rotary ClockDoug Thompson reports, "the Rotary Clock was approved last night.   Mike and Ken did a great presentation and were very prepared and thorough so the hearing went smoothly and the Clock idea was very well received as a 'symbol of our community'."

Annually, CSR has been represented at the Claremont's Oak Park Cemetery Memorial Day Service, by our President.  We present a gift of a drought-tolerant plant to the cemetery.  This year was no exception, as Dan Kentner attended, representing us.

Two years ago, Claremont Sunrise completed a two year project--the Sunrise Rotary-Presecan Memorial Shade Shelter in the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park.  The genesis of the project was to commemorate the Centenniel of Rotary Interational.  Then when we lost our member Nick Presecan, it became clear that a shelter in the Wilderness Park would be a wonderful tribute to him.  Thanks to the tireless efforts of many club members and community tradesmen-especially John Goss, ably shepherded by Doug Thompson and Chuck Freitas, we were able to have the "unveiling" in Oct. 2006.

As we do every year, Claremont Sunrise contributes funds and serves on a community committee to review educational grant requests for the Best Bets program.

We are involved in District 5300's Literacy Program, "Reading by Nine".  For it, we purchased books for both a parochial and public grade school to increase their library resources.

We have participated in the Claremont Friends of the Library's Adult Spelling Bee and taking the crown twice!

Excerpt quote from the Courier article on the 2009 win:

"As a Rotarian, we always enjoy participating both in community and international projects, so this is one more way to support our community," said David Seccombe, a member of the winning team.  "For us, we try to promote many literacy and youth projects and this dovetails nicely with both of those goals."
